"Free At Last: Uncle Solomon Bierley joins the Silent Multitude Gone Before. Died Sunday September 24"
Died on Sunday, September 24, 1899, at his home near Pekin, Solomon Bierley, aged 91 years, 7 months and 16 days.
The death of Uncle Sol. Bierley did not come unexpected as he had been very feeble for many months. He was born in Roann County, N.Carolina, February 8, 1808, and came to this country in 1814 with his parents. On the 21st of May, 1829, he married Nancy Alvis, who died a few months ago. For 70 years the couple lived happily in the same homestead among the romantic hills that surround the vicinity of Pekin. Their early days were full of hardships and privations.
Together the young couple cleared the forest around the home, the wife working as hard with ax and plow as the husband.
Then came the children--eight of them--Catherine Crouch of Gosport, Ind.; May Jane Dewden of Cedar Gap, Mo.; David W. Bierley of Pekin, Ind.; Jacob T. Bierley of Pekin, Ind.; Elizabeth Carnes of Lee Summit, Mo.: and Emma C. Wells at home. All of them grew up to man and womanhood, married and reared families and then two of them died--David W. Bierley and Sarah A. Fordyce--these being the only deaths in the family. The children and children's children amount in the aggregate to 132--a remarkable family showing. There are 6 living children, 37 grand children, 88 great grand children and 1 great-great grandchild, the latter being R. D. Patrick, a bright boy now nearly three years old.
On the 12th of April 1899, the Democrat published a lengthy biography of this remarkable couple from which we reproduce the following:
"In their married life they have not only the remarkable record of living together for seventy years, but both aver that during that long period, covering the scriptural span of life they never quarreled. They have seen the forests cleared away, a great State grow out of the wilderness, and have both helped in its building up. Now they are simply waiting, surrounded by friends and descendants. Mrs. Bierley is unable to leave her bed, but the old man is still able to walk about. Both hope to live until the anniversary which shall round out the three score and ten years of their married life."
A few weeks after Mrs. Bierley died and her aged husband quickly followed.
